You Can Learn A Lot From Children's Songs

The other night, on the way home from tap class, Kenners requested some of her favorite children's music. Normally I just tap my foot along and let my mind wander, but on this particular evening I was especially drawn to the words of one of our favorites: Fast and Slow by Laurie Berkner.

Do y'all know it? It is featured on Nick Jr., and is now one of our favorite songs to stretch to during Tap class. You know what I realized? Laurie's music teaches important lessons {and not just to children!} You know what else I realized? That I'm totally lame and cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to post a Youtube video to my blog post. I can post it to my actual blog, but can't figure out how to get it in the post. So, if you are interested in viewing Laurie's song, Fast and Slow, click HERE {I'm even rolling my eyes at myself}.

Back to the story. I think we could all learn a thing or two from this song. At least, I know I can. The part in yellow, especially speaks to my heart.

I don't want to go slow, I go fast.

I'm a rabbit, I hop, and I jump, and I dash.

And I'll go whizzing by,

in the blink of an eye,

Like a jet engine airplane

That speeds through the sky

I don't want to go slow, I go fast.

I don't want to go fast, I go slow.

That's the way that I move

I'm a turtle, ya know.

Join me as I crawl by,

we can laugh,

we can cry,

we can breathe,

we can sigh,

we can talk about why

we don't want to go fast,

we go slow.

I don't want to go slow, I go fast.

I'm a rabbit, I hop, and I jump, and I dash.

And I'll go whizzing by,

In the blink of an eye,

Like a jet engine airplane

That speeds through the sky.

I don't want to go slow, I go fast.

You don't want to go slow, you go fast.

And you may find you're missing the world you go past.

Crickets singing their sound

Golden leaves on the ground

You might find something new that you wouldn't have found if you never went slow, only fast.

So, won't you slow down, and wait for me?

Take it slow, take it slow, take it slow.

C'mon, slow down.

We can share all the new things we see,

When we're slow.

Here we go,

Together we're slow.

And other times we can go fast.

What do you think? What song speaks to you?

I love Laurie Berkner. I found her when someone told me it was kids music that would drive parents nuts.

That is lovely song...Off to download it!

I love that song. I've never really listened to the words, how true!

So true, you can learn so much if you really listen to the words. There are some powerful songs out there...even kids songs.

We love Laurie Berkner at our house! I think it's so important to have quality music on with your kids because they absorb it like a sponge. The other day, Bailey (just turned 2), started singing a Francesca Battistelli song in the van!
